Sowell, John Cemetery AKA Sowell #2Local history, USGSTHC site visit MB 6-22-05 w/ K Skillern: San Augustine, Tx area, S of SH 147 to R or W on FM 2558, which extends as CR 361 for 1.3 miles to Y at CR 361 A. Stay R at CR 3430, continue on CR 361 A for 1.3 miles to second Y, take unmarked left, at signs for Birdwell, Anthony Parker, West and Mitchells, then stay on CR 361A on past CR 364 at Y take left on hilltop, look left up high hill, overgrown, metal pasture gate visible. Short wooded path visible to site. Approx 100 ft. E up path, but only about 30 ft. from road, but up the high bluff. Small fenced cemetery, freegrowth trees, overgrown shrubs and vines. Formal markers mostly standing, obelisk, limestone,commercial markers, a few fieldstones, marker Cedar, fallen, also some marker stumpts. Markers are mostly Sowell family graves. One legible death date in 1870s. No floral grave materials, no evidence of recent visitation. Gate closed but not locked. Sowell, John Cemetery, Approx 0.06 mile. SA-C158.
